Employee apps: which everyday tasks belong on a smartphone
Which employee tasks suit a smartphone: requests, inspections, photos, approvals, offline queues and connections to corporate systems.
Designing an Android app for varied screens: states, permissions, interruptions, offline data, a test matrix and publication.
Android apps run on devices with different screens, resources and system versions. Quality depends on preserving user tasks across those conditions. Development therefore starts with target devices and scenarios rather than assuming one successful phone test proves readiness.
Define the audience, required capabilities and minimum requirements. A managed corporate fleet can use known models; a public product needs broader coverage. Check current Google Play release requirements during planning and submission rather than freezing an old policy version indefinitely.
Build a risk-based device and test matrix. Consider window size, orientation, memory and required hardware. Supporting every possible combination is not a realistic criterion, so make boundaries and known limitations explicit.
Test keyboards, long text, larger fonts and accessibility. Rotation or window resizing should not unnecessarily erase input. For example, an employee filling a request receives a call and returns to the unfinished record.
Plan state retention and recovery after interruption. Do not assume continuous background execution; the system manages resources under its rules. Important actions should remain understandable on return, including transmission status.
Request camera, location and other permissions only for required features. Refusal should lead to a clear explanation and an appropriate alternative. Users should not see endless loading when the real issue is missing permission.
For offline use, define local availability and conflict handling. A saved request and server-confirmed order are different states. Control retries so transmission does not duplicate operations.
Run core tasks, sign-in, errors and data-preserving upgrades across the agreed matrix. Emulators help, but actual target devices also need testing, especially cameras, sensors and unstable connectivity.
Google Play disclosures should match actual data collection, including third-party SDKs. After release, monitor failures and system changes. Maintenance preserves quality as well as adding screens.
