Cat 5e cable is designed for frequencies up to 100 MHz and guarantees a speed of up to 1 Gbit/s over a distance of up to 100 meters. Cat 6 operates at frequencies up to 250 MHz, has an internal plastic separator for pairs, is significantly less susceptible to crosstalk and is capable of transmitting data at a speed of 10 Gbit/s (up to 55 meters), which creates a significant margin for growth of the company's network for the next 10–15 years.

It is not recommended to completely do away with cables for system business. First of all, the Wi-Fi access points themselves require a high-speed cable connection to get internet and PoE power. Second, stationary PCs, IP phones, servers, network printers, and video surveillance systems work one order more stably with zero delays precisely through the physical cable.

According to corporate engineering standards, it is recommended to install a minimum of 2 RJ-45 ports per desk: one for a computer or laptop, another for an IP phone or backup (for example, connecting a local network printer or a second monitor with a docking station).

A simple Chinese tester shows only whether the contacts match from 1 to 8. A professional cable analyzer Fluke measures physical signal parameters: cable length, resistance, attenuation, crosstalk (NEXT/FEXT) and return loss.
