This is the world's gold standard of data reliability: you must have a minimum of 3 copies of important data (1 original + 2 backup copies), stored on 2 different physical types of media (for example, server array and separate NAS storage), and a minimum of 1 copy must be located on a geographically isolated remote site (for example, in a protected data center in Germany).

WORM (Write Once, Read Many) technology and S3 Object Lock lock a backup file at the hardware and system levels for a specified period (for example, 30 days). During that time, the file can only be read. Even if a hacker or virus obtains the administrator password or infects the network, it cannot encrypt, modify or delete your backups.

RPO (Recovery Point Objective) — this is the maximum amount of data that a company can afford to lose over time (for example, if a backup is performed once a day, RPO is 24 hours of work. We configure RPO to 15 minutes). RTO (Recovery Time Objective) — this is the time required to fully restore systems to operational status after a disaster (for example, how many minutes will it take for the accounting department to reopen 1C/ERP again).

External disk, connected to the server, is immediately encrypted by a virus along with the main system. In addition, human factor (forgot to connect, damaged the port, the disk fell off the table) leads to the fact that at the moment of real disaster the backup turns out to be outdated or damaged.

We recommend conducting automatic integrity verification of backups weekly, and full manual training with lifting working databases in the test sandbox — at least once per quarter. Only regular verification ensures that the system will rise in a real critical moment.
