Server administration: what needs to be monitored every day
What to monitor on a server: service availability, resources, logs, updates, backups and a clear response procedure.
What an infrastructure audit should contain: inventory, dependencies, access and backup checks, evidence and a prioritised action plan.
An IT infrastructure audit answers practical questions: what keeps the company operating, where weaknesses lie and what to fix first. A computer model list is only part of the result. A useful audit links technical facts to business effects and separates verified findings from assumptions.
List the offices, servers, cloud services and workstations in scope. Define access, owners and working-time constraints. Information gathering must not silently become configuration changes or load experiments on a live system.
Separately agree active testing and restoration on a copy. If obtaining evidence would cause unacceptable disruption, record the limitation. An unverified label is more useful than a health claim based on hearsay or an old screenshot.
Inventory hardware, operating systems, versions, licences and owners. Then identify dependencies on DNS, internet connectivity, storage and identities. A small device can be more critical than a powerful server if every department’s connectivity passes through it.
For example, a backup server may exist but share the same switch and power supply. It is not an independent recovery path if those components fail. A dependency map exposes shared failure points that an equipment list misses.
Review administrative privileges, revocation procedures and secret storage. Check updates and supported versions. Antivirus software does not replace reviewing accounts and externally reachable services.
Backups require demonstrated restoration of agreed data as well as green reports. Assess monitoring by whether it alerts an accountable person and leads to a clear action. Notifications nobody reads do not provide managed response.
Each finding needs a fact, evidence source, potential effect and proposed action. Prioritise according to service criticality and actual business dependency. Not every recommendation requires immediate equipment purchases.
The final plan separates urgent fixes, scheduled changes and further investigation. Assign owners and completion criteria. After changes, retest the original issue so closure means a confirmed outcome rather than time spent.
