Disaster recovery planning: testing whether the business can resume operations

How backups differ from recovery, how to define RPO and RTO, protect copies and rehearse restoring a service.

A successful backup report does not prove a business can resume after a disaster. Recovery needs data, configuration, access and a clear startup sequence. A disaster recovery plan connects these elements and tests them while the live environment is still available.

Agree acceptable loss and interruption

RPO describes acceptable recent data loss in time; RTO is the target recovery time. They are different requirements. Daily backups may not suit a process that depends on intraday changes; quickly restoring a server does not help if the required database version is missing.

Prioritise services with the business. Not everything needs to start simultaneously. For example, accounting access may first require networking, identity and storage. Recovery order must reflect those dependencies.

Measure Question it answers
RPO How much recent data can be lost?
RTO How quickly must the agreed function return?

Protect backups from the same cause of loss

A copy on the same device does not protect against its failure. Storage sharing administrative credentials may be affected alongside production. Choose separation, access controls and protection against modification according to risk scenarios and product capabilities.

Check files, configuration and required keys as well as databases. Backups and secrets must remain accessible when the main service is unavailable, without leaving them in an open folder for convenience.

Restore in an isolated environment

A rehearsal must not overwrite production data or send real messages. Prepare an isolated environment, verify backup integrity and restore dependencies in sequence. Record each stage’s duration and unexpected manual actions.

After startup, validate the application: an employee opens a required document, performs an agreed action and sees the correct outcome. Operating system startup or successful import cannot replace this check. Compare actual timing and available data with targets.

Update the plan after changes

Document owners, contacts, backup locations, access procedures and readiness criteria. Keep the plan available during an outage. If compromise is suspected, recovery includes checking the environment and replacing credentials rather than merely restoring an infected copy.

Review the scenario after server, integration or storage changes. Turn rehearsal findings into specific fixes and retests. A plan is useful only when the responsible team can follow it, rather than its author alone.

Key takeaways

  • Test backup creation and business function restoration separately.
  • RPO, RTO and recovery order depend on business requirements.

Frequently asked questions

RAID may improve availability for certain disk failures, but it does not replace independent copies and tested data restoration.

Frequency depends on criticality and environmental changes. Significant changes require reviewing and testing the affected scenario.
