Product MVPs: what to include in the first version to test an idea

Defining an MVP hypothesis, selecting a complete user action, separating prototypes from live products and assessing results without excess features.

An MVP is a minimum product version sufficient to test an important assumption with relevant users. Its value lies in learning rather than a short screen list. Define the decision the test should inform: continue, change direction or stop.

State a testable assumption

Consider a booking service for small studios. An assumption could concern whether customers complete self-service booking of an available slot. “People need a platform” does not identify what to observe or whom to involve.

Agree audience, scenario, feedback collection and decision criteria. Separate observed evidence from team opinions. A small sample can provide signals without establishing market-wide demand.

Keep a complete action

Minimum scope should let users complete the target task. Booking needs available-slot selection, confirmation and a clear next action. Removing a critical step may test an incomplete journey rather than the idea.

Defer secondary reports and automation where that does not distort the test. Document manual team operations, capacity and ownership. Do not present manual handling as unlimited automation.

Distinguish prototypes from live products

Clickable prototypes can test screen comprehension without proving integrations or willingness to pay. A live version with real data needs agreed permissions, protection, notifications and recovery. Calling it an MVP does not remove those needs.

The ALL IT Agency portfolio includes the Ratusha hotel website with booking. It illustrates connecting an interface to a concrete user action, rather than validating every new business model. Other products need their own hypothesis and criteria.

Collect evidence and decide

Assess task completion, abandonment, difficulties and relevant business measures. Analytics should follow the purpose and privacy rules. Visits alone do not show that a product solves the problem.

After testing, compare results with the initial assumption. Record conclusions, evidence limits and the next change. Base development on learning rather than automatically restoring every initially deferred feature.

Key takeaways

  • Minimum scope should test a specific assumption.
  • A prototype, live version and validated demand are different outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

No. Scope serves a hypothesis; requirements necessary for live operation remain.

They indicate perception. Behaviour, integrations and commercial assumptions need suitable separate checks.
