NAS, SAN and configuration backups: preparing a network for recovery

How NAS differs from SAN, how storage depends on networking and what to retain for restoring files, servers and network devices.

NAS and SAN describe different storage access models rather than data protection levels. NAS generally provides file access; SAN supplies block resources to systems. Both require permission control, network dependency planning and independent backups. Recovery preparation also includes the configurations of devices used to reach storage.

Choose access according to the workload

Shared documents need folders, permissions and understandable user access. Virtualisation or databases may require different protocols and latency characteristics. Match storage capabilities to the specific application’s support rather than choosing by acronym.

Assess concurrent operations, data growth and maintenance headroom. Large capacity does not prove sufficient performance. For example, bulk file copying may be fast while small random database operations experience delays.

Storage depends on networking and identity

Access may require switches, routes, DNS and identity services. Their failure can look like a storage fault. The recovery diagram should show dependency restoration order and checks along the client path.

Implement redundant links and multipath access only in supported configurations. Two cables do not automatically provide correct failover. Test an agreed component failure and application behaviour under a plan rather than experimenting on live data.

Retain data and configuration separately

RAID and snapshots may assist availability or state rollback but do not replace an independent copy. Assess device loss, accidental deletion and credential compromise. Backups must support the required history and restoration capability.

For networking, retain configurations, versions and required key information. For example, RouterOS binary backups and text exports have different purposes and limitations. Check platform documentation and protect files that may contain secrets.

Test restoration of the required function

In an isolated scenario, restore selected files or a service and verify permissions. A restored file is insufficient if staff cannot open it or an unauthorised user gains access. System data needs agreed application-level validation.

Hand over backup locations, access, restoration procedures and owners. Review instructions after network or storage changes. A usable procedure matters more than a configuration file that cannot be applied to available hardware.

Key takeaways

  • NAS and SAN define access models rather than backup readiness.
  • Recovery needs data, permissions, networking and configuration.

Frequently asked questions

No. It does not replace an independent backup for accidental deletion, complete device loss or other scenarios.

It depends on platform and format. Check support, version and port differences rather than assuming portability.
