Office cabling: designing structured cabling before renovation starts

Planning structured cabling before renovation: outlets, routes, racks, PoE, labelling and link measurements during acceptance.

Structured cabling connects workstations and equipment to network infrastructure. Planning errors are difficult to fix after renovation: another switch cannot replace a missing route inside a finished wall. Design therefore starts with the premises’ requirements and ends with measurements and documentation.

Count connections and growth requirements

Mark workstations, Wi-Fi access points, cameras, phones, printers and meeting rooms on the plan. Define connectivity and power for each. Compare current needs with agreed growth so spare capacity has a reason rather than an arbitrary multiplication of cable counts.

Confirm rack position, provider entry points, maintenance access and environmental conditions. Coordinate with the renovation team before routes are closed. Cabling infrastructure should remain serviceable without damaging finishes.

Choose components as a system

Cables, outlets, patch panels and cords must meet the agreed requirement level. Similar appearance does not prove equivalent characteristics. Environment, speed, length and installation method influence component selection.

For PoE, account for device requirements, switch capabilities and the cabling path. For example, an access point may connect but limit features because power is insufficient. A connectivity-only check may miss the issue.

Installation should leave identifiable links

Use matching labels at outlets, panels and diagrams. Agree orderly routing and suitable spare length without chaotic loops. Relevant specialists determine installation and electrical coordination requirements for the site.

Update the plan to reflect actual installation. If an outlet moved during renovation, document it. Otherwise future connections require cable hunting instead of a straightforward diagram-based task.

Acceptance depends on the required evidence level

A simple wiremap test does not prove every required link characteristic. Agree whether continuity verification, application qualification or certification measurements are needed. Test equipment and criteria must match the claimed result.

For agreed measurements, hand over reports identifying links and test parameters. Also test typical equipment connections. The result is a documented network with known characteristics rather than merely a lit switch indicator.

Key takeaways

  • Design cabling alongside the premises before renovation finishes.
  • Labelling and measurements form part of the installation deliverable.

Frequently asked questions

A wiremap tester checks only certain properties. Agree the measurement level according to link requirements.

Access points generally need network connectivity and power. Include their locations and required links in the design.
