Preparing for ISO/IEC 27001: what a company needs to put in place
Starting ISO/IEC 27001 preparation: scope, risks, owners, operational evidence, internal review and certification.
How vulnerability assessment works: scope, scanner capabilities, false positives, remediation priorities and retesting.
A vulnerability assessment identifies weaknesses in agreed systems and prepares a remediation plan. Automated scanners collect signals but may lack business context or exact configuration knowledge. Findings therefore need validation, explanation and conversion into owned tasks.
Before testing, record addresses, applications, owners and exclusions. Define access, time windows and actions if service degrades. A public website, internal server and production equipment need different approaches; one scanning profile does not suit everything.
Obtain owner authorisation and agree scope before active testing. Report systems that were inaccessible or excluded. No finding on an untested asset does not establish security.
Scanners can identify known version, configuration and exposed-service issues. Coverage depends on access, checks and the tool’s knowledge base. An unauthenticated external assessment differs from authorised inspection inside a system.
For example, a tool may infer an old version from a banner. Check the actual package and applied fixes because the visible name may not reflect patch status. Conversely, hiding a banner does not repair a real vulnerability.
For each significant finding, record evidence, conditions and potential impact. Separate confirmed issues from assumptions and false positives. The responsible team should receive the explanation without sensitive material being distributed widely.
Add context to technical ratings: external exposure, privileges, data criticality and dependencies. Agree immediate containment and full remediation separately when needed. Any accepted-risk exception needs an owner and review date.
The plan identifies assets, action, owner and completion criteria. Updating a package may require compatibility checks and a change window. Do not close the task solely because someone reports installing a fix.
Retest agreed findings and note remaining limitations. Environmental changes and new versions can introduce risks, so assessment is recurring. A report establishes a scoped, time-specific condition rather than permanent absence of problems.
