UI and UX: turning a user’s task into an understandable interface
Designing interfaces: user journeys, structure, prototypes, states, accessibility, validation and developer handover.
How UX audits work: scenarios, evidence, accessibility, priorities, improvement prototypes and post-implementation validation.
A UX audit identifies obstacles between a user’s need and a completed action. Causes include unclear text, hidden state, form errors and poor structure. It should provide justified recommendations rather than personal preferences about colours and spacing.
Agree core tasks: finding a service, comparing products, placing orders or processing requests. Define entry and outcome for each. Use available analytics after checking quality rather than treating every page exit as a problem.
User observation and interface review complement each other. Without evidence, a recommendation may be a hypothesis; label it accordingly. Do not invent lost-conversion percentages from a screenshot.
Run the scenario on relevant screens, including errors and back navigation. For example, a blog category may filter only visible cards, hiding other relevant articles. The button appears functional while behaviour fails expectations.
Review labels, guidance and action completion. An error message without a correction path does not help. Long text can hide the needed decision; assess order and precision rather than word count alone.
Review keyboard access, focus, contrast, labels and adaptation. Automated tools find some issues without proving full conformance. Include manual checks and, where agreed, assistive technology users.
Usability for one participant does not prove accessibility for everyone. Record tested conditions and limitations. Reveal animation-hidden content before assessment rather than relying on a clean first viewport.
Record location, evidence, consequence and proposed action. Prioritise impact on core tasks and confidence in the finding. A clear label or corrected component logic may solve a barrier without redesigning the entire site.
Validate solutions through a prototype or implementation against the same scenario. Compare available results and record open questions. Separate resolved problems from unimplemented recommendations so the audit supports practical follow-through.
