Docker and Kubernetes: understanding containers and when orchestration is needed

How containers package applications, how orchestration manages services and what data, secrets and recovery still require.

Containers package applications with their required environment; orchestration manages their execution and interaction. Docker and Kubernetes address related but different tasks. They are not automatically necessary for every website; choose according to complexity, load and maintenance capacity.

Containers separate applications from incidental environments

An image represents a prepared version; a container runs it. Define dependencies during build and provide environment configuration through managed mechanisms. This helps avoid applications that work only on one manually configured computer.

Reproducibility needs base image and component version control. For example, the same build instructions may download a different dependency today. Retain the validated image’s identity rather than rely only on a convenient name.

Orchestration manages desired service state

More components and nodes need scheduling, networking, health checks and controlled updates. Kubernetes provides mechanisms for these tasks. The cluster itself also needs administration, updates and monitoring, adding responsibility.

A simpler arrangement may suit a simple environment. Compare scaling, availability and staffing requirements. Popularity alone does not justify a cluster without product-specific value.

Data and secrets remain responsibilities

Restarting a container must not accidentally lose required data. Define persistent storage, backups and application consistency. A containerised database needs a recovery plan as seriously as any other deployment.

Do not include secrets in publicly accessible images. Restrict component permissions and network connections. Container isolation does not imply complete host independence or automatic protection of vulnerable code.

Test failures and updates

Test restarts, component loss and data restoration under an agreed scenario. Health checks should reflect service readiness rather than process existence. After updates, verify core user actions and component compatibility.

Hand over diagrams, images, configuration, access and support. Owners should understand environment scope and costs. Containers help when they make operation clearer rather than hide unresolved dependencies behind new terminology.

Key takeaways

  • Application packaging and orchestration have different roles.
  • Storage, secrets, clusters and recovery need explicit management.
