Corporate VPNs: connecting offices and providing remote access

How site-to-site VPN differs from employee access, and how to define routes, permissions, keys and connection checks.

A corporate VPN creates a protected channel between networks or between an employee’s device and required services. Its purpose is managed access rather than automatically exposing the whole office. Before configuration, define users, addresses, permitted operations and revocation procedures.

Choose the required connection type

Site-to-site connections link agreed subnets. Remote access gives an individual employee a path to required resources. These scenarios may use similar technologies but differ in identity, routing and support rules.

Establish required applications: file shares, accounting, administration or telephony. Check each application’s behaviour over the link, latency and DNS dependencies. The VPN may connect while the laptop still cannot resolve the server name.

Plan addressing and access boundaries

Office and client subnets must not overlap uncontrollably. For example, a home router and the office may use the same range, sending requests away from the intended server. Address this during design.

Define which traffic uses the tunnel and which stays on the normal connection. The decision depends on policy and use case. A remote employee receives access to required resources rather than the entire administration network merely because authentication succeeded.

Keys and accounts must be managed

Choose a supported protocol and identity mechanism according to platform capabilities. Individual employees or devices need managed access. A shared profile copied to everyone complicates revoking one connection and attributing activity.

Keep private keys and secrets out of public instructions. Define access changes after device loss, role changes or departure. A VPN does not make an infected laptop safe, so endpoint condition also belongs in access policy.

Test functionality and denials

Test connections from typical networks, required applications and reconnection after interruption. Separately verify that prohibited resources remain inaccessible. Testing as an administrator does not validate an ordinary user’s policy.

Hand over routing, access rules and employee instructions. Monitoring distinguishes tunnel health from the service behind it. Logs should support troubleshooting without collecting secrets or unnecessary work data content.

Key takeaways

  • A VPN connects agreed resources without replacing access control.
  • Test routes, DNS, revocation and prohibited destinations.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on routing and policy. Explain which traffic uses the corporate channel and what is logged.

Prefer individually managed access. A shared secret complicates revoking one user and accountability.
