Load testing assesses behaviour under a defined volume and mix of operations. Measure latency, errors and result correctness as well as accepted requests. Conclusions depend on workload and environment; one number cannot describe every deployment.

Model actual work

Identify core actions, their proportions, peaks and expected growth. Browsing and checkout load components differently. Testing one lightweight page does not establish full workflow capacity.

For example, a campaign may produce concurrent cart changes. Test writes, reservations and locking rather than image delivery alone. Use representative data volumes and distribution.

Agree environment and impact limits

Generate load only on authorised resources under an agreed plan. Isolate payments, email and partner APIs or obtain a specific permitted scenario. Tests must not become real mass messages or orders.

Record resources, versions, cache and configuration. Production differences limit conclusions. Define stop criteria and ownership to keep testing controlled.

Collect metrics together

Compare throughput, latency, errors and resource state. Averages may hide slow responses for some users. Review relevant percentiles and correctness against agreed criteria.

Queues, disks, databases and networking help locate bottlenecks. CPU growth alone does not explain the cause. Verify the load generator can produce the intended profile without becoming the limit itself.

Compare changes under equivalent conditions

Start with a small validation run, then increase load according to the goal. Sustained operation and sudden spikes answer different questions. Record results with profiles, data and limitations.

After optimisation, repeat the relevant scenario and check functionality. Hand over observed limits, causes and recommendations. Capacity is not guaranteed forever as data, integrations and versions change.

Key takeaways

  • Load should represent required operations and data.
  • Conclusions include profile, environment, latency, errors and limitations.

Frequently asked questions

No. Define concurrent operations, data and time-based system observation.

Another environment may have different limits. Validate against its resources and configuration.
